Teaching Philosophy
Learning to paint isn’t about learning formulas or special techniques but rather learning how to see. While there are many technical aspects of painting the most important part of an artists development is to see the truth of the painted subject.
As a teacher I have the privilege of assisting my students clarify and strengthen this knowledge and understanding. Sometimes this learning requires words and sometimes a visual demonstration. My greatest joy is seeing the spark ignite in my students when the connects are made and this is why I love to teach.

2 day workshop
July 27th - 28th
10:00am - 4pm
Art Society of Tasmania
268 Lenah Valley Rd, Lenah Valley TAS 7008
(Lady Jane Franklin Building)
Learn how to paint expressive, atmospheric watercolour skies using watercolour and reference photos.
Lets admit it... you can't escape it even if you wanted to. Whenever you sit down to paint a landscape painting that empty space at the top of the picture plane, the sky is always there. And it has such a huge impact on the balance of the painting as well as its general atmosphere. It isn't something you can just leave until the end of the painting. You have to address it early on as it influences everything. The sky can be cloudless, warm, overcast, cloudy and the list goes on and on. And each different sky requires a different approach and will have an effect on the rest of the landscape objects. Have you ever looked at a landscape and been daunted by the prospect of painting the sky or just painting the fluffy clouds in it? Or do you just want to have fun painting different skies to see the effects on your landscape?
Personally I think painting skies and clouds is one of the most enjoyable and exciting aspects of landscape painting as it uses techniques like wet into wet, lifting, washes and other exciting techniques.
Creating unique, atmospheric and individualised skies is what this workshop is all about. In this two-day workshop, Leanne Halls will teach you how to paint different sky and cloud effects in watercolour, whilst teaching you about design, value, colour, atmospheric perspective and other fun painting tips and advice. Participants will initially paint a number of different small sky and landscape studies which will be used to create their final large watercolour paintings.
This workshop is best suited to anyone who has a desire to learn about painting expressive atmospheric skies in watercolour.
